Pattern

  • A+は+B+より+形容詞+です A は B より adjective です (A is more ~ than B)
  • AのほうがBより形容詞です A のほうが B より adjective です (emphasizes A)

Structure

Start with what you are describing (A), then the thing compared (B) with より, then the adjective: 東京は大阪より大きいです. より always follows B, the standard of comparison.

Word order

The sentence can also be written with B first: 大阪より東京のほうが大きいです. Here のほうが picks out A as the one with more of the quality.

Asking

To ask which of two is more, use どちらが: 東京と大阪とどちらが大きいですか。 The reply is 東京のほうが大きいです.

Examples

  • 東京(とうきょう)は大阪(おおさか)より大(おお)きいです。

Tōkyō wa Ōsaka yori ōkii desu.

    Tokyo is bigger than Osaka.

大阪 is the standard marked with より.

  • 電車(でんしゃ)はバスより速(はや)いです。

Densha wa basu yori hayai desu.

The train is faster than the bus.

The adjective stays in its plain form (not more-fast).

  • 今日(きょう)はきのうより暑(あつ)いです。

Kyō wa kinō yori atsui desu.

    Today is hotter than yesterday.

    Compares two days.

Common mistakes

  • より goes after B (the standard), not A: 東京は大阪より, not 東京よりは大阪.
  • Japanese adjectives don't change for ‘more’. Don't add anything to 大きい; the comparison comes from より.
