Pattern

  • 名詞 + に + ございます “It is located at ~” (replaces にあります)
  • 名詞 + が + ございます/ございましたら “There is ~” / “If you have ~” (replaces があります)

Where it comes from

ございます is the humble-polite word for ある. It sounds one step more courteous than あります and is a fixed choice when speaking to customers.

When to use it

Use it to tell where something is (受付は一階にございます) or to say that something exists (ご質問がございましたら). The greetings おはようございます and ありがとうございます also contain this ございます.

Things to watch

It is very polite and fits service situations; do not use it with friends. The negative is ございません.

Examples

  • 受付(うけつけ)は一階(いっかい)にございます。

    Uketsuke wa ikkai ni gozaimasu.

The reception is on the first floor.

  • トイレは二階(にかい)にございます。

    Toire wa nikai ni gozaimasu.

The restroom is on the second floor.

  • ご質問(しつもん)がございましたら、お聞(き)きください。

    Go-shitsumon ga gozaimashitara, o-kiki kudasai.

If you have any questions, please ask.

ございましたら = ございます in the “if” form.

Common mistakes

  • Do not use it with friends or family; ある or あります is enough.
  • For people, 〜がいる is normally rendered as おります or いらっしゃいます. ございます is mainly for things and places.
