Pattern

  • 普通形(Nな・Aなだ→な)+ことから Plain form + ことから

Meaning and connection

A fact leads to a conclusion or judgment: 窓が開いていたことから、泥棒が入ったと分かった. Nouns and な-adjectives take な; い-adjectives and verbs take the plain form, then こと.

When to use

Common for the origin of names, for deductions in crime, and in news. It is for objective facts, not personal emotional reasons. More formal than ので or から.

Examples

  • この町(まち)は水(みず)がきれいなことから、有名(ゆうめい)になった。

Kono machi wa mizu ga kirei na koto kara, yūmei ni natta.
