てからでないと (te kara de nai to)
~てからでないと — “not unless ~ first”
Pattern
-
Meaning and connection
The structure is ~てから (after ~) + でないと (if it is not). Together: “If it is not after doing ~, then not possible.”
What follows
The second half is a negative or impossible statement: It sets a rule or a prerequisite, so it is common for procedures, manuals and notices.
~てからでなければ is a more formal variation with the same meaning. ~ないと alone only says a requirement; ~てからでないと stresses the order: first A, and only then B.
Examples
-

Common mistakes
- The second half must be negative or impossible. A positive sentence like 読んでからでないと、使います is wrong.
- Use the te-form before から.
