Pattern

After you / This way, please

Offering and inviting

Use どうぞ when you hand something over, invite someone in, or let someone go first: どうぞ、お入りください. Often a gesture goes with it.

Giving permission

As a reply to ~てもいいですか (May I ~?), どうぞ means “Yes, go ahead.” By itself it is a natural, polite answer.

~てください is a request for the listener to do something. どうぞ gives the listener the choice to take or do. Using both softens the tone: どうぞ、座ってください.

Examples

    “Douzo, ohairi kudasai.”

    “Please, come in.”

    Osaki ni douzo.

    After you, please go ahead.

    Douzo, kochira e.

    This way, please.

Common mistakes

  • どうぞ is for offering or permitting. To ask for a favor, use どうか or ~てください / お願いします.
  • Do not use どうぞ to refuse.
