Pattern

Meaning

'A から B にかけて' means the state continues or happens somewhere across the span from A to B. It is common in weather forecasts and in descriptions of seasons and regions. The range is loose.

から~まで marks a clear start and end. から~にかけて gives a rough span, so it does not suit precise times such as 'a meeting from nine to ten.'

Examples

Yoru kara asa ni kakete ame ga furu deshō.

Kyō no yūgata kara yoru ni kakete, kaze ga tsuyoku naru deshō.

Around here, flowers bloom beautifully from spring to summer.

Common mistakes

  • Do not use it for exact times or periods.
  • You need both から and にかけて; にかけて alone changes the meaning.
