Pattern

  • 普通形+わけだ plain form + わけだ (that’s why / so it is)

Finding the reason

When you learn a fact and a puzzling result suddenly makes sense, you say it with わけだ. The listener already knows (or the speaker has just realized) the cause.

Restating as a conclusion

It can also restate something logically: It sums up the result that naturally follows from the reason.

Careful points

It states a conclusion with understanding, not a new guess. It is closer to “as expected” than ~はずだ, which just says something should be true. Without 道理で / それで, the sentence still works if the cause was already mentioned.

Examples

Douri de samui wake da. Mado ga aite iru.

No wonder it’s cold; the window is open.

The reason (open window) explains the puzzling cold.

Hitobanjuu okite ita no ka. Nemusou na wake da.

You were up all night? No wonder you look sleepy.

En ga yasuku natta kara, gaikoku kara no kyaku ga fueta wake da.

The yen got cheaper, so that’s why visitors from abroad increased.

Common mistakes

  • It is not a guess about an unknown fact. Use it only when the reason is known.
  • Do not confuse it with わけではない / わけがない / わけにはいかない, which have different meanings.
