Pattern

  • 名詞(範囲・グループ)+ の中で + 一番/最も + 形容詞 クラスの中で一番背が高い / 四季の中で秋が一番好きだ
  • A の中で B が いちばん ~ この店の中で、このケーキが一番人気だ

Where it comes from

中 means “inside a range” and で marks a place or range. クラスの中で means “within the class.” The range can be a group of people, seasons, places or kinds.

When to use it

Use it to name the top item among three or more: クラスの中で彼が一番背が高い, 四季の中で秋が一番好きだ, この店の中で、このケーキが一番人気だ. To ask, say ~の中で、何がいちばん~ですか.

Difference from similar words

For two items, use AよりBのほうが~; for three or more, use Aの中でBがいちばん~. Keep the で when comparing.

Examples

  • クラスの中(なか)で彼(かれ)が一番(いちばん)背(せ)が高(たか)い。

Common mistakes

  • Do not use it for just two items; compare with AよりBのほうが instead.
  • The range must be a noun; it does not follow an adjective such as 高い.
