Pattern

Where it comes from

こと plus する means “choose to do ~.” It focuses on the act of choosing rather than on the result. The polite form is ことにします.

When to use it

Use it to decide on new habits or goals: A similar feeling of choosing is found in choosing a dish with これにします.

ことにする is your own decision; ことになる is decided by others or by circumstances. ~ことにしている means you keep to a rule you set for yourself as a habit.

Examples

Common mistakes

  • For something decided by others, use 会社が転勤させることにした makes the company the decider.
  • Watch the order with negatives: 行かないことにする (decide not to go) differs from 行くことにしない (do not decide to go).
