Pattern

  • 名詞A+から+名詞B+にかけて from A through B, loosely (春から夏にかけて)
  • 名詞B+にかけて up to around B (今週末にかけて)

Meaning and use

It is common in weather forecasts and descriptions of seasons or regions. 春から夏にかけて means roughly from early spring into midsummer, with no sharp boundary. It attaches to nouns of time or place.

Compared with まで

AからBまで has a clear start and end. にかけて has loose edges and describes a state or event that runs across the range. Because something continues through the period, it does not suit a single short event.

Examples

  • 今週(こんしゅう)末(まつ)にかけて天気(てんき)が悪(わる)くなる。

Konshū matsu ni kakete tenki ga waruku naru.

The weather will get worse toward the end of this week.

Used with just B: toward the weekend.

  • 春(はる)から夏(なつ)にかけて、花(はな)が次々(つぎつぎ)と咲(さ)く。

Haru kara natsu ni kakete, hana ga tsugitsugi to saku.

From spring through summer, flowers bloom one after another.

    A loose seasonal range.

  • 夜(よる)から朝(あさ)にかけて、雪(ゆき)が降(ふ)り続(つづ)いた。

Yoru kara asa ni kakete, yuki ga furitsuzuita.

Snow kept falling from night through morning.

The action continues across the whole range.

Common mistakes

  • It is odd for a single event. Use it for something that continues over the range.
  • For exact times or deadlines, use まで. にかけて is for loose ranges.
