Pattern

  • 〈place〉で V。 do V at a place
  • 〈means〉で V。 do V by / with something

Place of an action

で marks the location where something happens: レストランで たべます (eat at a restaurant). Compare に, which marks existence or a destination.

Means and method

で marks the tool, transport or language used: でんしゃで いきます (go by train), はしで たべます (eat with chopsticks), にほんごで はなします (speak in Japanese).

Examples

  • カフェで コーヒーを のみます。

    Kafe de kōhī o nomimasu.

I drink coffee at a café.

The action (drinking) happens at the café → で.

  • バスで がっこうへ いきます。

    Basu de gakkō e ikimasu.

I go to school by bus.

    で = by what means; へ = to where.

  • えんぴつで かきます。

    Enpitsu de kakimasu.

    I write with a pencil.

Common mistakes

  • で (action happens) vs に (something exists / destination): choose で only when an action takes place there.
  • For transport, the vehicle takes で: でんしゃで (by train), not ×でんしゃに when you mean "by train".
