Pattern

  • 動詞て形+いただけませんか Verb te-form + いただけませんか

How it works

It uses the negative potential いただけない of the humble いただく (to receive), meaning “could I not receive the favor of ~?” The negative leaves the listener room to refuse, which makes it polite.

How to use it

For asking someone to take a photo or open a window, and similar favors. A slightly less formal version is ~てもらえませんか.

Examples

  • ここで写真(しゃしん)を撮(と)っていただけませんか。

Koko de shashin o totte itadakemasen ka.

Could you please take a photo here?

  • 少(すこ)し窓(まど)を開(あ)けていただけませんか。

Sukoshi mado o akete itadakemasen ka.

Could you please open the window a little?

  • もう一度(いちど)ゆっくり説明(せつめい)していただけませんか。

Mō ichido yukkuri setsumei shite itadakemasen ka.

Could you please explain it slowly one more time?

Common mistakes

  • The speaker is asking; attach it to the action you want from the other person.
  • Ending with ~ていただきます makes it a statement, not a request.
