Pattern

  • やっと + 動詞(過去形) やっと + past tense (やっと終わりました)
  • やっと + 可能形(た) やっと + potential form (やっと食べられた)

Feeling behind it

やっと carries the speaker's relief after effort or a long wait. The result is positive and was wanted. 長い間探して、やっと鍵が見つかった (after a long search, the key was found at last).

Similar adverbs

ついに and とうとう are close. ついに is neutral and can also be used for long-awaited events with no effort of the speaker. やっと is about the speaker's own effort and a happy result, so it is more personal.

Examples

  • やっと仕事(しごと)が終(お)わりました。

    Yatto shigoto ga owarimashita.

I have finally finished my work.

  • 長(なが)い間(あいだ)探(さが)して、やっと鍵(かぎ)が見(み)つかった。

Nagai aida sagashite, yatto kagi ga mitsukatta.

After searching for a long time, I finally found the key.

  • 並(なら)んで待(ま)って、やっとラーメンが食(た)べられた。

Narande matte, yatto rāmen ga taberareta.

After lining up and waiting, I could finally eat ramen.

Common mistakes

  • Use it for good outcomes you wanted. For bad outcomes, ついに or とうとう is more natural.
  • It reports an outcome that has already happened; do not use it for a plain future plan.
