って (tte)
~って — as for ~ / called ~ (casual)
Pattern
-
何て(なんて)+ いう + 名詞何ていう = 何という (what is it called)
Casual topic marker
In conversation, って works like は when you bring up something and comment on it: 田中さんって、優しい人ですね. It often carries the speaker's feelings, such as impression or surprise.
Casual quotation
って is also the spoken form of the quotation と. Because it is so casual, avoid it in writing and formal speech, and use は or という there.
Examples
-
Tanaka-san tte, yasashii hito desu ne.
Mr. Tanaka is a kind person, isn't he?
-
Kono sakana tte, nante iu namae desu ka.
What is this fish called?
-
Ano mise tte, itsumo hito ga ōi ne.
That shop always has a lot of people, doesn't it?
Common mistakes
- It is very casual. In essays, emails to superiors and formal speech, use は or という.
- って has other uses too (hearsay, casual quoting of what someone said), so read it from the context.
