Pattern

How to use it

The word before it is a person, organization or living thing. The second half is an evaluation of value or difficulty from that standpoint, such as 大切だ, 重要だ, 難しい, 必要だ or 負担だ. It can also express your own view, as in

にとって shows the standpoint of the judge. It differs from に対して, which marks the target of an action. The second half is normally an evaluation of a state, not an action like する. Since it states a subjective view, it pairs well with 〜と思う.

Examples

Watashi ni totte, kazoku ga ichiban taisetsu desu.

For me, family is the most important thing.

    Evaluation from the speaker's standpoint.

For children, play is important learning.

    A general statement from a group's standpoint.

Ryūgakusei ni totte, keigo wa muzukashii.

For international students, honorific language is difficult.

Difficulty judged from the students' standpoint.

Common mistakes

  • The second half is an evaluation or state. For the target of an action use
  • Do not use intentions or commands afterward. “私にとって〜してください” is unnatural.
