Pattern

  • V辞書形/Aい・Aな/Nである+ことは+同じ語+が Same word repeated: X ことは X が

Form

Repeat the same verb: 読めることは読めるが. For い-adjectives: おいしいことはおいしいが. For な-adjectives and nouns: 好きなことは好きだが.

Meaning and use

The first half grants a fact; it is not emphasis. The second half adds 'but it is not perfect' or 'there is a problem.' It is natural when you want to concede the first point while voicing a reservation.

Examples

  • 漢字(かんじ)は読(よ)めることは読(よ)めるが、書(か)けない。

Kanji wa yomeru koto wa yomeru ga, kakenai.

I can swim, it's true, but I'm not very good at it.

Common mistakes

  • Use the same word before and after; different words break the pattern.
  • The second half must be a contrast, not more of the same.
