Pattern

Meaning

病院では携帯を切ることになっている says that it is the hospital's rule to turn off phones. It also covers schedules, as in Unlike ~ことにする (own decision), it is set by others.

Form

Because it states a present situation, ~ことになっている is the basic form. A decision made earlier is ~ことになった. In writing you may see ~こととなっている. It works for both rules and plans.

Examples

In the hospital, you're supposed to turn off your phone.

Common mistakes

  • Do not confuse it with ~ことにする (own decision). ~ことになっている is decided by others or an organization.
  • ~ことになっている is the current rule; ~ことになった announces a decision.
