いくら~ても (ikura~temo)
いくら~ても — no matter how much ~
Pattern
-
いくら+Vても/Aくても/N・Aなでもいくら + て-form + も
Connection
Verbs take the て-form + も (待っても), い-adjectives ~くても, nouns and な-adjectives ~でも. The main clause is the speaker's judgment or result, and is often negative.
Related forms
Close to どんなに~ても and 何度~ても. いくら covers amount, price, number of times and effort. いくらなんでも is a fixed phrase meaning 'even so, that's too much.'
Examples
-
いくら説明(せつめい)しても、分(わ)かってくれない。
Ikura setsumei shite mo, wakatte kurenai.
No matter how much I explain, he doesn't understand.
-
いくら待(ま)っても、バスは来(こ)なかった。
Ikura matte mo, basu wa konakatta.
No matter how long I waited, the bus didn't come.
-
いくら安(やす)くても、要(い)らない物(もの)は買(か)わない。
Ikura yasukute mo, iranai mono wa kawanai.
No matter how cheap it is, I won't buy things I don't need.
Common mistakes
- The main clause says the result stays the same. A clause that does not match that idea, like 'however much I eat, it is tasty,' is odd.
- い-adjectives become 安くても, not 安いても.
