上(うえ)で (ue de)
~上で — “after ~ing / upon ~”
Pattern
-
動詞た形+上でafter having done ~, then ~ -
名詞+の+上でafter ~ (noun of an action)
Do A first, then B
A is a necessary preparation such as thinking, reading, discussing or checking. B is the decision or action that follows it. The pattern stresses that B is done on the basis of A.
Where it is used
It sounds careful and formal: よく読んだ上で、サインしてください. Nouns often are action nouns: 相談の上で, 確認の上で (also 御確認の上). Everyday casual speech usually uses ~てから or ~たあとで.
Difference from ~てから
~てから only shows time order. ~上で adds “having done it properly first, and using that result.” It cannot be used when A is not a real step to prepare for B.

Common mistakes
- Use the ta-form (読んだ上で), not the dictionary form. The preceding step must already be done.
- It is formal. In casual talk, ~てから is more natural.
