Pattern

  • 動詞て形+もいいです te-form + もいいです (座ってもいいです)
  • 動詞て形+もいいですか ask permission: ~てもいいですか (May I ~?)

Connection

Change the verb to the て-form and add もいいです: 座る → 座って → 座ってもいいです. The も means ‘even if’, so literally it is ‘even if you do ~, it is fine’.

Asking and answering

Ask: ここで写真を撮ってもいいですか。 Say yes: はい、いいですよ/どうぞ. Say no: すみません、ちょっと…, or use てはいけません for a firm no.

Tone

As a statement it gives permission, which can sound as if you are allowing someone from above. When asking, it is perfectly polite. To a guest, 座ってください is a more natural way to invite.

Examples

  • ここに座(すわ)ってもいいです。

Koko ni suwatte mo ii desu.

    You may sit here.

    座る → 座って.

  • この本(ほん)を借(か)りてもいいです。

Kono hon o karite mo ii desu.

    You may borrow this book.

    借りる → 借りて.

  • ここで写真(しゃしん)を撮(と)ってもいいです。

Koko de shashin o totte mo ii desu.

    You may take photos here.

Compare with ちゃいけない: the opposite meaning.

Common mistakes

  • Use the te-form + も, not the ます form: 座ってもいい, not 座りますもいい.
  • Saying it to a superior as a statement can sound like you are giving them permission. Use a question or a polite invitation instead.
