Pattern

  • 名詞(範囲)+の中で+A+が一番+形容詞/動詞 group + の中で + A + が一番 + adjective/verb

Structure

First give the group: スポーツの中で (among sports). Then the winner and 一番: サッカーが一番. Finish with the predicate: 好きです.

Meaning of 一番

一番 literally means ‘number one’. Before an adjective or adverb it means ‘the most’: 一番早く起きます (gets up the earliest).

Note

The marker after the winner is が, not は. For a group of two, Japanese uses a different pattern (どちらが…), so の中で is for three or more.

Examples

  • スポーツの中(なか)でサッカーが一番(いちばん)好(す)きです。

Supōtsu no naka de sakkā ga ichiban suki desu.

Among sports, I like soccer the most.

    Group: スポーツ, winner: サッカー.

  • くだものの中(なか)でりんごが一番(いちばん)好(す)きです。

Kudamono no naka de ringo ga ichiban suki desu.

Among fruits, I like apples the most.

Same pattern with a different group.

  • 家族(かぞく)の中(なか)で父(ちち)が一番(いちばん)早(はや)く起(お)きます。

Kazoku no naka de chichi ga ichiban hayaku okimasu.

In my family, my father gets up the earliest.

早い becomes the adverb 早く before 起きます.

Common mistakes

  • Mark the winner with が, not は: サッカーが一番, not サッカーは一番.
  • Before a verb, an い-adjective becomes the adverb form (早い → 早く).
