Pattern

  • 普通形+のは+名詞+だ Verbs and i-adjectives in plain form (作るのは母だ)
  • な形容詞+なのは+〜だ Na-adjectives take な (大切なのは健康だ)

How it works

To highlight “my mother” in 母が毎朝ご飯を作る, you say 毎朝ご飯を作るのは母だ. Here の stands in for “the person / thing / fact”.

When to use it

Use it to answer who / what / which questions, or to make the key point stand out. It is close to ~ことは but の is more conversational.

Examples

  • 一番(いちばん)大切(たいせつ)なのは健康(けんこう)だ。

Ichiban taisetsu na no wa kenkō da.

The most important thing is health.

  • 毎朝(まいあさ)ご飯(はん)を作(つく)るのは母(はは)だ。

Maiasa gohan o tsukuru no wa haha da.

The one who makes breakfast every morning is my mother.

  • 窓(まど)を割(わ)ったのは弟(おとうと)だ。

Mado o watta no wa otōto da.

The one who broke the window is my little brother.

Common mistakes

  • Na-adjectives need な: 大切なのは, not 大切のは.
  • Put the highlighted part right before だ / です; keep that order.
