Pattern

  • 名詞 + に + 気がつく 忘れ物に気がつく / 間違いに気がつく
  • 普通形 + ことに + 気がつく 誰かいることに気がつかなかった (I didn't notice someone was there)

Where it comes from

気 means awareness or attention and つく means “attach,” so “attention turns to it.” The thing noticed takes に. The verb 気づく has the same meaning (間違いに気づいた).

When to use it

Use it when you discover something afterwards: 電車の中で忘れ物に気がつきました, 自分の間違いに気がついた. For what you did not notice, use ~に気がつかなかった.

Things to watch

気がつく is for noticing naturally, all of a sudden. For deliberately paying attention, use 気をつける (足元に気をつけてください). Before a clause, always include ことに.

Examples

  • 電車(でんしゃ)の中(なか)で忘(わす)れ物(もの)に気(き)がつきました。

Densha no naka de wasuremono ni ki ga tsukimashita.

I noticed I had forgotten something on the train.

  • 自分(じぶん)の間違(まちが)いに気(き)がついた。

Jibun no machigai ni ki ga tsuita.

    I noticed my own mistake.

  • 後(うし)ろに誰(だれ)かいることに気(き)がつかなかった。

Ushiro ni dare ka iru koto ni ki ga tsukanakatta.

I didn't notice that someone was behind me.

Common mistakes

  • The particle is に, not を: 間違いを気がつく is wrong.
  • Before a clause you need ことに: 誰かいる気がつかなかった is wrong.
