Pattern

  • 名詞 + みたいに + 動詞・形容詞 鳥みたいに飛ぶ / 真夏みたいに暑い
  • 普通形 + みたいに + 動詞 知っているみたいに話す (speak as if you knew)

Where it comes from

It is the adverbial form of みたいだ: だ becomes に and describes the following verb or adjective. It means the same as 鳥のように, but is more casual and spoken.

When to use it

Use it for wishes, impressions and comparisons: 鳥みたいに空を飛びたい, 子どもみたいに大きな声で笑った, 今日は真夏みたいに暑い.

Relation to the other forms

Use みたいだ at the end of a sentence, みたいな before a noun, and みたいに before a verb or adjective. ~みたいになる means “turn into something like ~” and shows change.

Examples

  • 鳥(とり)みたいに空(そら)を飛(と)びたい。

Tori mitai ni sora o tobitai.

I want to fly in the sky like a bird.

  • 子(こ)どもみたいに大(おお)きな声(こえ)で笑(わら)った。

Kodomo mitai ni ōkina koe de waratta.

I laughed in a loud voice like a child.

  • 今日(きょう)は真夏(まなつ)みたいに暑(あつ)い。

Kyō wa manatsu mitai ni atsui.

Today it is hot like midsummer.

Common mistakes

  • Use みたいに before verbs and adjectives, and みたいな before nouns (鳥みたいに飛ぶ / 鳥みたいな人).
  • 鳥のみたいに is wrong; attach it directly to the noun.
