Pattern

  • 動詞辞書形 + ことができる 弾く → 弾くことができる / 見る → 見ることができる
  • 動作名詞 + が + できる Suru-verbs: 運転ができる (= 運転することができる)

Where it comes from

こと turns the action into a noun and できる (“be possible”) follows, giving “it is possible to do ~.” The polite form is ことができます; the negative is ことができない.

When to use it

Use it for skills (ピアノを弾くことができる) and for what a place or situation allows (この部屋から海を見ることができる). 泳ぐことができる and 泳げる mean the same.

Difference from similar words

In speech the potential form (弾ける, 見られる) is more common; ことができる suits explanations, writing and formal situations. With ことができる the object keeps を (ピアノを弾くことができる).

Examples

  • 私(わたし)はピアノを弾(ひ)くことができます。

Watashi wa piano o hiku koto ga dekimasu.

    I can play the piano.

  • 妹(いもうと)は自転車(じてんしゃ)に乗(の)ることができる。

Imōto wa jitensha ni noru koto ga dekiru.

My little sister can ride a bicycle.

  • この部屋(へや)から海(うみ)を見(み)ることができます。

Kono heya kara umi o miru koto ga dekimasu.

You can see the sea from this room.

Common mistakes

  • Always use the dictionary form before it. 弾いたことができる and 弾いてことができる are wrong.
  • Do not double the potential: 弾けることができる is unnatural.
