やすい (yasui)

~やすい — easy to ~, tends to ~

In short · Added to a verb to mean “easy to ~” or “apt to ~.” It attaches to the stem (ます-form without ます). The whole thing then behaves like an い-adjective. The opposite is ~にくい or ~づらい.

Pattern

  • 動詞ます形(語幹) + やすい stem + やすい (読む → 読みやすい)

Two meanings

The first is “easy to do because of the nature of the thing”: 読みやすい本, 分かりやすい説明. The second is a tendency, often an unwelcome one: 事故が起きやすい (accidents tend to happen), 風邪をひきやすい (catch a cold easily).

Conjugation

Because it ends in い, it conjugates as an い-adjective: 読みやすかった, 読みやすくない, 読みやすくて. It can modify a noun directly: 読みやすい本.

Examples

  • この本(ほん)は字(じ)が大(おお)きくて読(よ)みやすいです。

Kono hon wa ji ga ōkikute yomiyasui desu.

This book has big letters and is easy to read.

  • 先生(せんせい)の話(はなし)はとても分(わ)かりやすいです。

Sensei no hanashi wa totemo wakariyasui desu.

The teacher's explanations are very easy to understand.

  • この道(みち)は暗(くら)くて、事故(じこ)が起(お)きやすい。

Kono michi wa kurakute, jiko ga okiyasui.

This road is dark and accidents tend to happen easily.

Common mistakes

  • Use the stem: 読みやすい, not 読むやすい.
  • The thing that is easy to do is the subject: この本は読みやすい. The subject is not the person who reads.
