JLPT N3 · Guessing & hearsay
In short · An adverb for a guess that something may be the case, even if the chance is low. It is often paired with ~かもしれない at the end.
Pattern
-
Meaning
もしかしたら、彼は来ないかもしれない means there is a lowish chance that he will not come. It is close to もしかして and ひょっとしたら.
Choosing the word
もしかしたら is used in guesses. もしかすると and ひょっとすると are more formal. When you are fairly sure, use きっと or たぶん.
Examples
-
Moshikashitara, kare wa konai kamoshirenai.
Perhaps he won't come.
-
Moshikashitara, michi o machigaeta no kamoshirenai.
Perhaps I took the wrong road.
-
Maybe my mother has already arrived home.
Common mistakes
- Do not use it when you are sure: もしかしたら絶対来る is unnatural.
- End the sentence with a guess such as かもしれない; it does not match a flat assertion.
