Pattern

  • Nも+V/A条件形ば+Nも N も + ば-form + N も
  • Nもあれば、Nもある N も あれば、N も ある

Meaning and form

The first half is も + ば-form, the second も + predicate. It lists items of the same kind, as in パンもあれば飲み物もある, or opposites, as in いい日もあれば悪い日もある.

Compared with similar forms

Adding ば to plain も~も gives a softer, descriptive feel. It resembles AだしBも, but も~ば~も lists things within the same category.

Examples

Common mistakes

  • Do not drop either も: パンあれば飲み物もある is unnatural.
  • Mind the ば-form: い-adjective よければ, verb あれば.
