Pattern

Place of an action

It marks the place where an action happens, such as studying, playing or eating. In 図書館で勉強します the library is where the studying happens.

Means and tools

It also shows the way something is done: a vehicle, a tool, a language

Difference from に

The place where something exists is marked by に (机の上に本があります). The place where an action happens is marked by で. Learners often mix these up.
