Pattern

  • Vた+結果、〜 Past form + 結果
  • Nの+結果、〜 Noun + の + 結果

Connection and meaning

Use the past form of a verb (話し合った) or a noun + の (検査の結果). It means 'as the outcome that came afterward.' What follows is an actual fact or decision, not a guess or the speaker's intention.

Difference from 結果として

~結果、~ opens a clause and states the cause-and-effect flow in a rather formal tone. 結果として stands on its own and sums up what came before, like 結局. Both are common in news and reports.

Examples

  • よく話(はな)し合(あ)った結果(けっか)、旅行(りょこう)は中止(ちゅうし)になった。

Yoku hanashiatta kekka, ryokō wa chūshi ni natta.

As a result of much discussion, the trip was canceled.

  • 毎日(まいにち)練習(れんしゅう)した結果(けっか)、大会(たいかい)で優勝(ゆうしょう)できた。

Mainichi renshū shita kekka, taikai de yūshō dekita.

As a result of practicing every day, I was able to win the tournament.

  • 検査(けんさ)の結果(けっか)、体(からだ)に問題(もんだい)はなかった。

Kensa no kekka, karada ni mondai wa nakatta.

As a result of the examination, there was nothing wrong with my body.

Common mistakes

  • Use the past form: 話し合った結果, not 話し合う結果.
  • Do not follow it with intention such as ~たい or ~よう.
