Pattern

  • 一度に+V 一度に + verb

Meaning

一度 means one time and に marks the manner. 一度に~する means doing something in a single go or at the same time. It fits actions with large amounts or many people: eating a lot, coming in, clearing tasks.

Notes

同時に stresses that two or more things happen at once; 一度に stresses doing it all in one go. In negatives (一度にはできない) it means 'it can't be done in one go.'

Examples

  • そんなに一度(いちど)にたくさん食(た)べられません。

Sonna ni ichido ni takusan taberaremasen.

I can't eat so much all at once.

  • 大勢(おおぜい)のお客(きゃく)が一度(いちど)に店(みせ)に入(はい)ってきた。

Tamatta yōji o ichido ni katazukete shimaō.

Common mistakes

  • 一度に is different from plain 一度 (once, as in 日本に一度行った).
  • It does not mean 'only one time' but 'together, in one go.'
