Pattern

  • Aは+どこ+ですか Where is A?
Where to / where do you ~?

Asking where something is

(The toilet is over there).

Asking about movement or action

どこへ行きますか asks the destination; どこで食べますか asks where the action happens. Replace どこ in the answer: 学校へ行きます.

Word order

In Japanese, the question word stays in the same place as the answer. You do not move it to the start, and you do not need a rising tone for the question; か is enough.

Examples

    Toire wa doko desu ka.

    Where is the toilet?

Anata wa doko e ikimasu ka.

Common mistakes

  • Do not forget か at the end of the question.
  • どこ asks for a place. For a thing, use なに; for a person, use だれ; for a time, use いつ.
