Pattern

  • 動詞ます形(語幹)+方 verb ます-stem + 方 (読み方)
  • する動詞:名詞+の+し方 する-verbs: noun + の + し方

How to form it

Take the ます-stem and add 方 (食べます → 食べ方). Since it is a noun, the object links with の, not を (漢字の読み方).

When to use it

It often pairs with 教えてください or 知っていますか when asking how to do something.

Difference from どうやって

〜方 is a noun naming the method itself. どうやって is an adverb asking about the method.

Examples

  • この漢字(かんじ)の読(よ)み方(かた)を教(おし)えてください。

Please teach me how to read this kanji.

  • この料理(りょうり)の作(つく)り方(かた)を知(し)っていますか。

  • 駅(えき)までの行(い)き方(かた)を教(おし)えてください。

Eki made no ikikata o oshiete kudasai.

Please tell me how to get to the station.

Common mistakes

  • Do not attach it to the dictionary form (not 読む方). Use the ます-stem.
  • As it is a noun, the object takes の (not 漢字を読み方).
