JLPT N5 · Sentence patterns
がほしい (ga hoshii)
~がほしい — “I want ~”
In short · Expresses wanting a thing. The pattern is noun + がほしいです, and ほしい conjugates like an い-adjective.
Pattern
-
名詞+が+ほしいnoun + が + ほしい (車がほしい)
How to use it
The wanted thing takes が: 新しい車がほしいです. Negative is ほしくないです and past is ほしかったです.
Whose feeling
Normally it is the speaker’s own feeling. To ask, say あなたは何がほしいですか. For a third person use ほしがっています.
Difference from 〜たい
For things, use がほしい. To want to do an action, use verb ます-stem + たい (食べたい).
Examples
-
新(あたら)しい車(くるま)がほしいです。
Atarashii kuruma ga hoshii desu.
I want a new car.
-
冷(つめ)たい水(みず)がほしいです。
Tsumetai mizu ga hoshii desu.
I want cold water.
-
もっと時間(じかん)がほしいです。
Motto jikan ga hoshii desu.
I want more time.
Common mistakes
- Do not attach ほしい to a verb. It is 見たい, not 見るほしい.
- It sounds odd to say 彼はほしいです for another person. Use ほしがっています.
