だけでなく (dake de naku)
~だけでなく — not only ~ but also ~
Pattern
-
名詞 + だけでなく、~も子どもだけでなく、大人にも (not only children but also adults) -
普通形(な形容詞は〜な) + だけでなく、~も安いだけでなく、品物もいい
Add one more
The first half is limited to the obvious or basic point, and the second half adds a surprise or a bigger point: 安いだけでなく品物もいい. The pair is almost always completed by も in the second half.
Compared with ばかりでなく
だけでなく is neutral and used in both speech and writing. ばかりでなく is a bit more formal. 〜のみならず is the most formal written form. All of them express the same idea of adding more.
