Pattern

  • N が ほしい です。 want N
  • N は ほしく ない です。 don't want N

What it does

Use ほしい for wanting a thing: あたらしい くるまが ほしいです (I want a new car). The thing wanted takes が.

たい vs ほしい

Use たい for wanting to *do* something (verb); use ほしい for wanting *a thing* (noun).

It's an い-adjective

Negative ほしく ないです, past ほしかったです.

Examples

  • あたらしい かばんが ほしいです。

    Atarashii kaban ga hoshii desu.

    I want (more) time.

Common mistakes

  • ほしい is for things (nouns). For wanting to do an action, use the verb + たい.
  • The thing you want takes が, not を: ×くるまを ほしい is wrong.
