Pattern

  • V-たい です。 want to do V
  • V-たく ない です。 don't want to do V

What it does

たい expresses your own wish to do something: たべる → たべたい (want to eat), いく → いきたい (want to go). Add です to be polite.

It acts like an い-adjective

Negative: たべたく ないです. Past: たべたかったです — just like おおきい.

Object: が or を

With たい the object may take が or を: みずが のみたい / みずを のみたい (want to drink water).

Examples

  • すしが たべたいです。

    Sushi ga tabetai desu.

    I want to eat sushi.

  • にほんへ いきたいです。

    Nihon e ikitai desu.

I want to go to Japan.

  • きょうは なにも したく ないです。

Kyō wa nani mo shitaku nai desu.

I don't want to do anything today.

Negative たく ない works like an い-adjective.

Common mistakes

  • たい attaches to the verb stem (のみ+たい), not the dictionary form (×のむたい).
  • たい is for your own wish. For someone else's wish, Japanese uses 〜たがって います — a step beyond basic たい.
