Pattern

  • 動詞た形+り、動詞た形+り+する V-ta + り, V-ta + り + する (読んだり、聞いたりする)
  • い形容詞た形+り can also list states: 高かったり安かったりする

Connection

Change each verb to its plain past form and add り: 読む → 読んだ → 読んだり, 聞く → 聞いた → 聞いたり. Finish with する (します in polite speech). The tense of the sentence is shown by する.

Meaning

It gives examples of what you do, without claiming these are the only things: 日曜日は本を読んだり、音楽を聞いたりします. Compare て-form lists, which show steps in time order.

Both actions needed

Normally both parts are said. The actions can happen in any order or alternate. Opposites are common: 行ったり来たりする (go back and forth), 笑ったり泣いたりする.

Examples

  • 日曜日(にちようび)は本(ほん)を読(よ)んだり、音楽(おんがく)を聞(き)いたりします。

Nichiyōbi wa hon o yondari, ongaku o kiitari shimasu.

On Sundays I do things like read books and listen to music.

読んだ → 読んだり; 聞いた → 聞いたり.

  • 公園(こうえん)で走(はし)ったり歩(ある)いたりします。

    Kōen de hashittari aruitari shimasu.

I do things like running and walking in the park.

走った → 走ったり; 歩いた → 歩いたり.

  • 休(やす)みの日(ひ)は掃除(そうじ)をしたり洗濯(せんたく)をしたりします。

Yasumi no hi wa sōji o shitari sentaku o shitari shimasu.

On days off, I do things like cleaning and doing laundry.

Each part has its own verb: ~をしたり.

Common mistakes

  • Use the ta-form + り for each verb, and end with する: 読んだり聞いたりする. Don't drop する.
  • Don't use it to list actions in strict time order; use the て-form for that.
