Pattern

  • N です。 It is N. (polite)
  • N じゃ ありません。 It is not N.
  • N でした。 It was N.

What it does

です is the polite way to say "is/are". It comes at the very end, after a noun or な-adjective: がくせいです (am a student), しずかです (is quiet).

Making it negative

Replace です with じゃ ありません (conversational) or では ありません (formal): がくせいじゃ ありません (am not a student).

Past tense

です → でした (was); negative past → じゃ ありませんでした. きのうは やすみでした (yesterday was a day off).

Examples

  • これは ほんです。

    Kore wa hon desu.

    This is a book.

  • わたしは がくせいじゃ ありません。

    Watashi wa gakusei ja arimasen.

    I'm not a student.

じゃ ありません = the negative of です.

  • きのうは やすみでした。

    Kinō wa yasumi deshita.

    Yesterday was a day off.

でした = the past of です.

Common mistakes

  • です makes a sentence polite but does not conjugate like a verb — don't stack verb endings on it.
  • With い-adjectives, keep the い and just add です (おおきいです). Don't say ×おおきいじゃ ありません — negate the adjective itself (おおきくないです).
